MESSAGE TO MEMBERS OF DISTRICT 22 (ETOBICOKE AND YORK) -RTOERO, DEC. 2020

This message is accompanied with a message of good wishes for the holiday season. Many members will have had this same message mailed out to them.

No matter one’s set of beliefs this is a special time of year. However, as we all know this year has been one like we have never experienced before and I am sure that we cannot wait for 2020 to come to an end. There is great hope for better times in 2021. It has been a tough year for all of us as we have been forced for the most part to distance ourselves from family members, friends and colleagues and we will need to continue to do so for a little while longer. I know that all of us are suffering from COVID fatigue but we must persist in practicing all those strategies that Public Health and Government leaders have earnestly urged us to follow in order to keep ourselves safe and healthy.

There are six buttons after the short explanations below.  Press the appropriate buttons if you wish to see the messages

The first message is for seniors that may suffer to some degree of social isolation. To see this, press the button

News For The Month of October 2020

This is a special announcement on ending isolationism and staying connected

It takes a lot of work to stay connected during the Covid months. Zooming, FaceTiming, emailing and even telephoning can beat us down, even create apathy in the most gregarious of us. But stay connected, we must.

Why? We are social animals.

Studies show that we thrive on our relationships. We’re healthier because we have others who are active in our lives. But this year, we have been challenged in this, the most important of human activity. Some, challenged more so than others. This is why The Foundation, YOUR Foundation is reminding all RTO-ERO members to reach out, get involved

Each one of us knows now, how limiting our social bubble has affected us. Imagine what life has been like pre-Covid for the thousands of who live alone in isolation. We can do something now and imagine how we can change our lives and the lives of others going forward.

A letter for an Important Bill that is being supported by RTOERO

Bill 196 is a private member's bill before the Ontario Legislature. If passed and enacted it would create a Seniors' Advocate. British Columbia already has such a position. Given the most recent crisis, where seniors seemed to have been impacted most significantly, It is hoped that District 22 members would be greatly interested in supporting such a move.   Private member's bills seldom have a chance of becoming reality.  Perhaps, with support, this one has a good chance of becoming one of the rare ones. A gentle reminder that Doug Ford is not only the Premier of the province but also the MPP for Etobicoke North. Messages to Premier Ford might have a significant effect. But the other MPP's in Etobicoke and York should also hear from members."

The Second is about the Tax Status of Employer Contributions to Health plans .

SUBJECT:  FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CONSIDERING TAX STATUS OF EMPLOYER CONTRIBUTIONS TO HEALTH PLANS

We’ve received a few enquiries at Provincial Office with regard to reports that the federal government was considering the tax status of employer contributions to an employee’s health and dental insurance. The following is for your information to reassure members, should you receive a similar enquiry.

1.     Prime Minister Trudeau announced in the House of Commons on February 1, 2017, that the government would not consider such a tax.

2.     Even if the federal government considered such a change, RTO/ERO’s Group Insurance Plans would be unaffected as our premiums are 100% paid by our members – there is no employer contribution whatsoever.

3.     Premiums that our members pay toward our Group Insurance Plans are eligible toward Canada Revenue Agency’s medical expense tax credit.
